RIP DAN. FRANKIE FRANKIE DAUGUSTA
I just wanted to say how great Dan Hartman was. I will always remember the song :"I can dream about you" as a song I feel in love with and never tire of. I use to hear it during the summer when my kids were growing up at the local pool and for years I have listened to it over and over. His music is the best!! Marie LoPrete
I sure hope the album "Relight My Fire" will be released on CD sometime soon. I don't understand why the "Instant Replay" album IS on CD and "Relight" is not..... Anon
Yes Mr. Hartman will remain as one of the best in my mind forever. I will never forget when I saw him in San Jose,Ca. I believe it was in the year of 1974, playing a bass guitar that was literally attached to his silver jumpsuit. That was just unbelievable for its time. I'd have to say that I would rate his melodic tunes to that of Mr. McCartney. Man would that have been something if the two of them were to have recorded together. Well my question is, with all of the great music this artist has put out, why aren't there any reissues of all his albums, or a two CD set with all his greatest (which would be all of them). Can't someone get in touch with Rhino Records and request a release ? please inform me with any information of this sort. My favorite albums of his were and still are, "Images" and "It hurts to Be In Love". I've recorded the albums to my MP3 player, but there are just too many crackles, I need to hear a clean copy. Thanks for listening, John Mendoza
Nearly 13 years have passed since Dan's passing, and when I hear his music (even today) I'm both happy and sad at the same time--happy because his music has always either rocked me hard or made me want to get up and dance. Most of his songs had very "positive" messages in them. I feel sad in that I believe the world lost so much in his passing--a musician, singer, songwriter, producer, and very giving person. I've sang in bands for 26 years, and from the postings I have read from those who knew and loved him, Dan Hartman seemed like an awesome man--someone I would have liked to have met and talked music with. I wonder what he would have thought about the direction that pop/rock music has taken today; I wonder if he would have embraced it, or blazed a new trail. I wish I had found this site sooner. It is the best! Regards, Debra Miller, Tampa, FL
Hello and thank you for this ongoing Dan Hartman tribute website! From time to time I come back to this site, praying that you'll finally have some news that SOMEBODY has taken on the task of reissuing all of Dan's non-disco albums, that were originally released on "Blue Sky", especially "It Hurts To Be In Love" and "Images", on CD! Being a twenty + year radio announcer, I realize that following the long trail of just which record company now holds the key to the "Blue Sky" masters is a tricky matter, but I'm willing to guess that it's the company, this week called, SONY/BMG. Here in the U.S., SONY/BMG have an oldies catalog label called "LEGACY RECORDS", which still reissue many of their catalog's old titles. I can only guess that most of Dan's albums, especially the two that I want the most, never sold enough copies on vinyl, to even warrant their reissue on CD, but there is the Japanese Market, who reissue old albums, much like the style of Dan Hartman albums, all the time, over there. Maybe we should start a campaign with SONY in Japan and maybe we could "Keep The Fire Burnin", for Dan and his fans? Thanks for any help, Chris Casale
I was listening to some Edgar Winter stuff today which is Thanksgiving. Our family has a couple of nurses who have to work today so we shall celebrate the holiday tomorrow so today is my free day. As I was listening to the music, I remembered how “Danny” and the Legends would come up to play at Penn State for our fraternity parties. I had played keyboards in many local Lancaster bands and had cut some records under the name of the Ambassadors. Yet, I was always blown away by Dan’s music. My roommate, Chuck Hrobak, had gone to high school with Dan and often talked him into letting me sit in with the band. Imagine my thrill later on, when I heard ”Free Ride” being played on the local stations written by Dan Hartman. At that time, I was primarily into soul music, but Dan’s versatile styles really opened my eyes. I can only listen to his great music now, and we lost a true talent and a fine gentleman when Dan left us. The last time I saw him was when he came in from the road to visit with Chuck. He was in his first year with Edgar and was working like crazy. He was very tired, but still talked music with us for a couple of hours. That was Dan. Regards, Burton Hill
Thanks for putting together such a wonderful site. My first album was "They Only Come Out At Night" and Autumn is my favorite song from the album. I still play it on my guitar. It has special meaning for me because we all had an Autumn end to love. I saw Dan on David Letterman and he sounded so good and had such a kind face and disposition. Thanks again... John
A Testimony to Talent After all these years, I've come to realize what a talent this guy was. I first heard the song "Free Ride" in my teens and learned the song's very original guitar riff while playing in my first working band. Years later I fell in love with "I Can Dream About You" from the movie "Streets of Fire" and couldn't believe it was the same guy. What versatility. Having played in many soul and Motown bands, I can honestly say that Dan had a lot of soul and was able to bridge the gap between rock and R&B like few others have. Dan is an inspiration to me as a musician and songwriter. Brian Dring Connecticut, USA
Growing up in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania during the 70s as a girl who wanted very much to be a drummer but who couldn't afford a drum kit or lessons, I did the next best thing: I hung out with an older crowd of working musicians and observed. I first met Dan in 1977, at an outdoor jam on a huge porch deck. He was bouncing around and laughing, talking a mile a minute and playing every instrument there. My friend Jack introduced me, and he asked me what I played. I blushed and said I could sing a little backup. He said, well get UP here then, indicating the makeshift stage. I was too intimidated, though; all the guys up there were real players. The next year, 1978, I had managed to overcome shyness and break in as a backup singer (not a very good one though) with a working band. I still ran around with real musicians, yearning to one day be able to play drums like Jack did instead of standing up front in tight jeans and mooing lame and somewhat flat backup vocals into a mike... One night a friend called me late and said, Run over to Turtle studios on Trindle Road! They need backup singers there! I jumped into my VW and rushed over in a downpour at 11:30 at night, arriving dripping wet. Dan answered my knock and laughed, Here's one that braved the elements! Come on in! Hey, it's you--I remember you. Hey Rick, this one's in! I wedged myself into a packed foyer, elbow-to-elbow with at least 50 other aspiring backup singers. Dan seemed to be running the show, bustling around and clapping his hands together and chuckling This is GREAT! This is gonna sound great! I had no idea what was going on, but Dan finally herded about 30 of us into a tiny studio with a ceiling mike and told us what he wanted: rhythmic hand claps and a simple chorus, all together, no harmony. Like this, guys--(one, two, three, four) WIN-NING!! (one, two, three, four) WIN-NING!! Really shout it out, put some beef in it. Ready?? We cut that track in about 15 minutes; turned out to be a single for Rick Derringer, titled (not surprisingly) " Winning". We caught a brief glimpse of Rick now and then, but Dan was the ringmaster, laughing and joking and beaming at all of us as though he were just tickled to death we'd all come down to the studio late and in the rain. I think he really was. I hadn't known that Dan had passed, until I read a "transitions in music" column in a magazine the other day..I was shocked. One loses track of people as life flows by--I had just assumed that Dan was into producing now, out of the limelight. He was a great producer, as well as a great musician/songwriter/singer. I wish I could tell him that after all those years I finally did become a professional drummer, at age 45. I wish I could tell him I finally did Get UP there, just to see him beam at me and clap his hands and say ALRIGHT! I knew you could do it!! Rest easy, Dan. You inspired many many people, myself among them. I hope you're in a wonderful place right now...you deserve to be. Anon.
In January, 1977, I picked up my brand new 1977 Pontiac Firebird from the dealership. It had an 8-track player, so for my VERY 1st song I played in the 8-track as I drove out of the dealership was "Instant Replay". My friend, Michael was with me in the car and DISCO was our lives. Unfortunately, AIDS claimed Michael's life in 1994, that same year it also claimed Dan's. I am almost 50 in body (in a wheelchair with Multiple Sclerosis), but my 6-CD changer in my convertible are all DISCO CD's. Thank you Dan, for being a big part of my life, and giving me pleasure on the dance floor back in the late 70's. I know when I get to Heaven, you and Michael will be running that 70's DISCO and I WILL DANCE !!! John
Thanks so much for such a wonderful tribute site to this great man. When I was young, I had the immense pleasure of dancing to all of Dan's music in the nightclubs I frequented. I have to say that Vertigo/Relight My Fire was my favorite. It churned something inside of me that is hard to explain, something very carnal and very primal. Also, Countdown and of course Instant Replay were staples for all us "disco twinks." This was all in the late 70's/early 80's. To my surprise I had the privilege of meeting Dan in the early 90's when I moved to New York City. He and I went to the Healing Circle in Manhattan with about 200 others. This was a very special time in NYC. The AIDS crisis was in full insanity mode still and those of us who hoped to survive were turning inward to try and heal spiritually as well as physically. Those nights at the healing circle were very special to me. I remember the first time I went over to Dan, introduced myself and told him the effect his music had on me as a young gay man. We hugged and I had tears rolling down my cheeks, I was so in awe of him. And now, to be in the same room as him every Monday night. What an honor that was. He played the piano often for the group and participated in activities like the rest of us. Sometimes you meet a celebrity and wish you hadn't. With Dan, his real person only enhanced what I already thought of him from his music. I'm so sorry he didn't make it. But his music and his spirit live on in our hearts. Thanks Dan. Your creativity is a miracle. Philip Bahr Kingston, NY
I became a Dan Hartman fan as soon as I heard the opening notes of "Hanging Around" on "They Only Come Out At Night". I remember watching him on those late night shows like Midnight Special with the Edgar Winter Group. I have all of the Edgar Winter albums with Dan on them, as well as Dan's solo albums all the way through "Keep the Fire Burning". I saw Dan live with the Edgar Winter Group and I have a photo of him in the famous silver suit with the built in bass! It's a bit faded with time, but it is in one of my scrapbooks. I sat on the front row and he was singing "Devil in the Blue Dress" especially to our section. It was just too cool. I listen to his music constantly to this day. It was a sad day when he passed away, but he sure left us so many good songs. I am a singer/songwriter too, so I appreciate the way he crafted his songs. I have sung "Autumn" at gigs over the years, that song really gets to me. Perfect melodies, perfect hooks...to me, "I Can Dream About You" is one of the greatest pop songs of all time. I only hope Dan gets his due someday in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thank you so much for this site, I have really enjoyed reading the various remembrances about Dan and seeing the photos. What a talent! His music will live forever. Donna Frost Hendersonville, TN www.donnafrost.com
Dan Hartman's death in 1994 (see www.danhartman.com) was a tremendous loss to the music community. A singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Dan Hartman was one of the most talented individuals I have ever had the good fortune to listen to- and see perform Live... This CD is excellent- although it does not due justice to the amount of music Dan wrote, produced, and performed over the course of his lifetime. Keep The Fire Burnin'............ Mel Solis
Okay, diehard Fletchies. I know a lot is going on right here in 2003, but I want to drop back to the 1980s for a moment. A vague source has informed me that she believes there was a music video for Dan Hartman's "Get Out of Town" from the "Fletch" soundtrack. Her recollection was sketchy, but she thinks it showed Hartman dressed up as a fortune teller. Chevy then walked into the tent and sat opposite him. As the music played, scenes from the movie popped up in a crystal ball. I surfed onto danhartman.com, which is a tribute site to the musician who died back in 1994. They have some still shots posted that are listed as being from the "Get Out of Town" video. There are no shots of Chevy and no video clips, so I'm not sure if this is what we're looking for. I sent an e-mail to the people who maintain the Hartman site and asked if they knew about the movie video. The site is based in the UK. HAVE ANY OF YOU SEEN THIS VIDEO? The hunt is on, Fletchies. If it exists, let's find it! Bandit
Who was Dan Hartman? Most of you will remember his hit I Can Dream About You from the 80's movie Streets Of Fire. Well it turns out his one hit was just the tip of the iceberg . I own the CD from the Edgar Winter Group from 1972 called They Only Come Out At Night and he wrote or co-wrote most of the songs and played on them. But sadly, his life was cut short when he died of Aids related symptoms in 1984. After reading about him on the site www.danhartman.com only then did I truly realize what a visionary this world lost. Music tends to be a disposable industry where people are used and then discarded when the cash stops flowing in but even among his peers, Dan was at the top of his game. All I ask is you take 15 mins like I did and check the site above out. I was sad that he died but seeing all he did and left behind made me wish he was still around to talk to. Matthew DeGeorge
Just wanted to say I think the website is wonderful. I knew Dan from my days of playing music at The Railroad House in Marietta , PA. As a matter of fact, I caught Dan's last gig with The Legends there. I can honestly say that Dan was one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet and a true inspiration to many. I can still hear him doing Jefferson Strongbox with the Legends. He was incredible. The last time I spoke to Dan, just before he left to join Edgar, he said, “keep playin ' man.” I'm now 52 and sometimes sit alone with my guitar……. And play Autumn. Thanks for the great website and the wonderful memories, Dan Reese
For me it all started with ”They Only Come Out at Night” – Edgar Winter Group. But as I listened to record, it became more and more clear for me, that this band had more than just one front man. Shortly told, the song “Autumn” from this album told me that, here is a guy that will make a lot of very good and nice music in the future. And the solo records came rolling on from Dan. The highpoints with Dan’s music for me is many, but one of the best is “All I Need”. The ballad over all ballads. From the record “It Hurts to be in Love”, For me, it is one of the 3 records that I will bring along with me to “the lonely island”. But, what happened with the “White Boy” demosongs. There are several songs here, finished off with all the singing and backing, good as anything else he has made, but they haven’t been issued. Henry Thompson, Oslo Norway
My first recollection of Dan was in 3rd grade. Yes I still remember it to this day. Our teacher had him play some piano concerto for the class. He was amazing even then. We were never close friends but both played in bands through out high school. We went the Beatle / Rock route and I went with soul / Motown. Didn't know he liked the Motown sound so much. Did he ever mention the Penbrook Fire Hall. 1963-64. early Legends. I new then that he would eventually make it big. He had so much talent. He has given us so many great tunes. My sympathy to his family and friends. Ken P
Hi I only just found out about Dan. I am so sorry. I wondered why I hadn't heard anything on him for awhile. but thought he was just relaxing. my regards to his family. I loved him and Edgar together. Seen him play along side with Edgar. Great musicians.
dan hartman - love is a natural.. this could quite possibly be one of the most soulful, deep, REAL songs i have heard for the dancefloor.. and not to be racist, but i now truly believe soul has no colour... i FELT this song completely!! its a soul classic... respect, love, and vibes.. from a believer. peace julien.. btw, is it possible to order a copy of this vinyl anyhwere?
Autumn, the wind blows colder than the summer. What a songwriter. I only had wished that music fans all over the world gave one listen to songs like, "My Love", "Sundown", "Heaven In Your Arms", "Waiting To See You", "All I Need", "Maybe Some Day You'll Call My Name", "Shy Hearts", I can go on and on. What a talent he brought to the industry. I sorely miss his music and I just hope and pray that Dan is proud of his work that he gave to his fans because I am sure proud to say that I am a huge Dan Hartman fan always and forever ! Peter J Buonanno
Hi There: First of all, I want to thank you for keeping such a beautiful web site up and running and updated. I know Dan is smiling down on you for keeping his mark in life, which in my opinion is a very important one, specially being a songwriter and singer myself, and utmost fan of Dan's work. I stay sincerely yours, God bless! Nelson Frank Ureña singer*composer*arranger*producer NelFrank Music Unlimited
I threw a very old CD in my player a few weeks and was shocked to remember Dan is on this. The artist is Paul Pesco the CD is called Make it Reality. The label is Sire Records #25872-2 it contains a version of Free Ride produced by Paul and Rick Derringer with background vocals by Dan. Im sure this is long out of print but figured it would be a good one for the discography for the collectors out there. I also picked up a video of EWGw/RD on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert on e-bay,obviously not a legit release but I wanted to have a video memory of the time I saw him live. I have also written to several of the reissue labels in hopes of getting Images, It hurts etc re-released on CD ,I hope they pay attention. Site looks great! Keep up the good work. Best, Kevin
Just wanted to say hi and how much I enjoyed visiting your wonderful Web Page and tribute to Dan Hartman. I first heard Dan with Johnny Winter then followed his career with Edgar and his solo albums. I'm a musician myself and I always could hear Dan's natural talent! I just purchased the CD "Keep the fire Burnin" yesterday so I'm listening to Dan all over again. The effort you have put into the Web Page is appreciated! regards and peace, Denny
My gosh. I didn't know what had happened to Dan. I can remember him from the Railroad House club. Being a musician myself since a child, I always had an interest in the back of my mind to see how Dan did in the music world. His name popped in to my mind this evening so thought I would get an update on him. I am saddened. I only saw him twice in person with the Legends, Once in Hanover, Pa. and once as an opening act for The Brooklyn Bridge at Gettysburg College. This was about 1969. I was pleased to read some history on Dan and what he had been up to from 1969 till 1994. It appears my gut feeling way back then was right. He would have an affect on modern music. My sympathy to those who were closest to him. Jay Torrance, Ca. Originally from Littlestown, Pa. 10 miles south of Gettysburg.
I was so jolted when Dan passed on. I was a huge fan of his. I absolutely totally loved everything he did and how he sounded. He was immensely talented! {Despite the fact that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were beyond genius with prophetic personality roles in direct reflection and response to the desire of the mass consciousness of our planet for their time; Paul McCartney being the most talented musical genius of our time with the best most complete sense of music of anyone in our century; that being said, besides that}, Dan Hartman was my very favorite bassist-singer-songwriter of all time, even more than Sting. Dan's voice, songwriting and creative bass playing really "did it for me"! When you hear an artist and get so excited when you hear them, That was Dan to me. I wish he could have contributed more but for his time here he was true greatness manifested on earth and I loved his music and him for sharing himself with us. Sincerely Paul Glover
Man, what a website! It's great. I've been taking a short drive down memory lane lately, listening to old tracks from "my era"-late 70's early '80's and thought I'd do a search on Dan. You have done a great job immortalizing him. Thanks. The looonnnng version of Relight My Fire is one of my favorite songs from back then.
Dan is the best musician to have ever walked on earth. I love your site. I have a few photos of Dan that one day I would like to add to your site, as well as an oil painting that I plan on doing of Dan playing on stage. I also have 16 mm motion picture film of Dan on stage, with Rick Derringer & Edgar Winter. unfortunately I Have no sound, since it was shot with a silent camera. My footage was shot with the intention of putting the images to the instrumental "Frankenstein". Dan carried a cassette recorder with him on the road, (like a ghetto blaster) and would listen to the previous night's live recording of the show. I lived for Dan's music, always waiting for him to put out something new. One day (April 6, 2000) when in the library, I was in the music section and decided to see if there was anything new that I couldn't find in the record stores here in Canada. My mind froze in time when I saw the words speaking of his death. It broke my heart to know that I could never find Dan or his new music again in this world. I have not been the same since. Dan could emanate his joy to play music to the audience, when he came on stage you could see it in the expression on his face, and the way he moved, unlike any I have seen. I had seen Jim Morrisson close up with the Doors in their early days. But in the history books of all knowledge of musicology, Dan Hartman relit a fire that will smolder for eternity in any life he touched. He used this earth as a magnetic ground for his feet, and with his mind, heart, soul and fingers, he was tapped into the very pulse of creation, where music is stored in the cosmos. I hope this site will always be here for people to share and learn of him. Cliff.
I discovered Dan Hartman when I happened upon his song "The Love In Your Eyes"........in my opinion one of the best songs to have ever been recorded. I listen to it often. Thanks Dan for making my life better! Sincerely, Ken Hildebrand
1973 CampHill PA. My brother tells me that Dan's new album with Edgar Winter is OUT, so we race to "Sight & Sound Music" at the Cedar Cliff Mall to see if it's true that one of our local guitar hero's (of "The Legends" Fame) is collaborating with Edgar (which has been nothing but hearsay around the music community for the last couple of weeks) and if they have it yet. My brother finds it first and grabs it up....we both stare in amazement.......when I saw Dan standing right there beside Edgar Winter, a Shiver ran right down my back........it wasn't a rumor anymore, here was proof.....Danny had hit the Big Time! Locally, we loved him and the Legends, not just because he (they) was popular and talented, and sounded GREAT.... but because he never stopped being a nice person, took time to say hello to everybody, never stuck-up or to "Big" to be nice to his fans. He would play his heart out on stage, then play an encore, and if the fans clapped long enough, he was know to come out smiling, sweating, thanking us, then play TWO more songs. The show was the MAN AND his music, in ALL ways, he was a hero to us. Thats how we remember him around here. Now don't get me wrong, Edgar is a GIANT talent in his own right, even more incredible Live than on his albums (saw Edgar live at the Spectrum in Phili PA with the Original White Trash with Rick Derringer and Jerry LaCroix. All Amazing Showman with a Capitol A.) That Night Edgar proved his worth 'cause he rocked Hard and with everybit of talent and polish as his veteran bandmates, and now, soon after that night, here was our Dan, in the good company of none other than THE Edgar Winter Group. It couldn't be more perfect than this! When we saw Dan's performance with Edgar and the new Band ... When he was done, did every one else AND me realize that EVERYBODY.......the stage crew, the Audience, the band, us ........we were so Blown Away by his performance.......He was even better than before, it was like Dan had taken control of the whole world for a few, brief minutes, and then gave it back to us, in his modest and graceful way, with just a smile and a bow, and was gone. Even Edgar looked stunned after Dan's guitar solo!! We were literally in shock for days around his old home town. What a take-off, and it was onward and upward from here. I recount just one small thread here of the his work....... Dan gave us all a very, very special gift thru his music......himself. Thank You Dan, for expressing for us thru your music, a little of who you were, and a bounty of what you felt, and for including those of us lucky enough to hear and see you. You never knew me personally, but you spoke to me, and to all of us. We love you for that.......and thats FOREVER. A fan
I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Legends at a club called The Country House. It was the final night of the rock clubs history and several bands including mine (Stoned Fox) appeared that evening ending with The Legends closing the evening and the club. I remember the incredible performance that Danny gave which has inspired myself to push on in music!!! I went on to form Harrisburgs (Dalton Brothers Band in the late 70s and am currently in Canada working on my recording projects. I just wanted to share the love and inspiration that we Hartman fans hold dear. I personally feel a great obligation to carry on the tradition of Harrisburgs history of music quality which I consider Danny as no.1. Lets keep the fire burnin!! Mark "Dalton" Edward
Thank you for the information on your site. I heard NEW GREEN clear blue from a Hearts of Space program in 1989, and it has been my favorite CD since then. I never thought to look for web sites related to him until just now. I've always wanted to know more about him, and now have that opportunity. Richard Lambert
Hi-just found your web page. I was the morning jock on Harrisburg's only rock station WFEC and friend of Dan's. I would be happy to update you about the early day's and his transition from the Legends to the Epic label. Dan and I were also close neighbors. Ronnie G
Wow....just checked out the site.....looks really good. Isn't the full length version of 'Re-light......' just fab!!! CGF
Hello, I have looked everywhere on the web and I am unable to find what I am looking for. I found your site which is a GREAT Tribute to Dan Hartman. THANK YOU! What I am looking for particularly is the song "Talkin to the Wall" I believe it is off the album "This Is It" CBS 1987. If you could direct me to a location to buy the CD or better yet, a place to find the MP3 "Talkin to the Wall" I would be very grateful. Thanks again for the wonderful site and keep up the great work!- JIM
I am a big Dan Hartman fan, I have all his songs and he was one of the best musicians in the world. Even though he is not recognized much but I think he was famous from the start. PEACE OUT! A-MAN
Hi, You have a wonderful site in remembrance of Dan Hartman. I was looking for one of his songs and I believe the title is "I Still Remember". Have you heard of it? Where might I get a copy? Everywhere I have checked, it is out of print. Is there any way to get an album or single of the song? Any help is greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Robert Las Vegas, NV
Hi. I saw Dan with the Edgar Winter Group at the Greensboro Coliseum just after they released the album "Shock Treatment". Though only 13 years old, I remember standing directly in front of the stage and being wowed by those guys' voices and musicianship. One of the roadies gave me a broken drum stick or two---both of which I kept for years. We had a family dinner about the time of Dan's death and I remember playing a worn old copy of "Free Ride" on my mom's stereo for several members of the family. I did not know the cause of his death until pulling up his web page this afternoon. I am sorry he had to suffer the indignity of being different in what can be a cruel world. Thanks for working hard to assemble such an informative site. Sincerely, Sam
Thank you so much for the truly fabulous Dan Hartman website. As a huge fan, and torch bearer of the Dan Hartman musical legacy, I feel somewhat out of the loop having not been able to find for purchase the CD, 'New Green clear blue'. I would be forever grateful if you could steer me in the direction of a purchase place for this recording. by the by, I was fortunate enough to meet Dan during the shoot of his video, 'I can dream about you', in downtown Los Angeles. he was gracious, funny, powerful and totally about the music. Thank you. Sam Mann
Dan Hartman was one of the most unique and talented people I've ever worked with! I love your site - danhartman.com. Keep up the good work! My best, Ellyn Harris
I am deeply saddened to learn of Dan's death. Thank goodness for great web-sites like this to keep us informed. I just thought Dan was taking a long break from recording, etc.. My fave of his is "Queen of My Dreams" on EWG Shock Treatment album. You can detect a little Led Zep influence there - it rocks, and still send chills down my spine! Of course "Autumn" and "Paradise/Sides" (untitled EWG album from '75) are very moving and beautifully-crafted songs too. The world will miss his spirit and music. Jeff Green
Thank God there is a website on Dan Hartman. I loved Instant Replay when I was a little girl and I think that Dan Hartman was the best thing to ever happen to disco music. He was so talented. God Bless Him. Steph
I got word through an email I was copied on from Edgar Winter that Danny had a site dedicated to him. It's lovely to know this and to see it. It's interesting that it originates in England. Danny was my best friend through high school in Harrisburg. We sat beside one another in home room and we each had bands back then with a friendly rivalry. I still miss him dearly and will always remember him. He was a great inspiration to me with my music. And, although I only now just fiddle around with music anymore (graphic designer by profession), I still hold his memory close. He was a hell of a talented man. I just wanted to say hello and send you a hearty congratulations from Pennsylvania. The best of luck, Jerry
A truly informative site which does the man great justice. I pulled out all the 12 inch singles and played them again - superb feel good music. Have added your site as a favouite! All the best. Neale
Hi thank you for the wonderful site! very nice. I am looking for the lyrics of the instant-replay (album) would you please add the rest? by the way - The Time Bandits (from Holland) made a 12 inch with Dan (producer and co writer) : "I won't steal a way"(1986) by the way, do you have more information about the Danish Rugsted and Kreutzfeld-duo Dan worked with??? thanks, Ge
Hi, I have only recently become a Dan Hartman fan (after hearing Instant Replay who could not become one?) and I must say this is one of the best websites I have ever seen. Not only is it full of details, but there is a wonderful sense of love and respect that is showed towards Dan Hartman that is not seen in many other music websites. The discography, background information and especially the interviews with friends and peers allow us to better understand who Dan was. I was not aware that Dan Hartman wrote Living in America or that he produced Tina Turner's Foreign Affair album. I was also not aware of Hartman's previous music before his disco hits. You all have done an excellent job of paying tribute to a talented yet underrated artist. Thank you. Thomas Corless
What can I really say that hasn't already been said before....Dan was truly a marvel. Of course I first became familiar with Dan through his work with the EWG but also quickly became a big fan of his. I've gone on to collect all of Dan's works and still listen to his music to this day. I really miss Dan and am grateful for this site. I'll continue to check back from time to time to see if there is any more news about Dan. Keep On Rockin' Deano
I met Dan Hartman once at a record show(early 90's) back in his hometown area, Harrisburg, PA. He spent time talking to me, and appreciated the fact that I enjoyed his music and was a fan. He kindly autographed a few records of his I bought, and just seemed genuinely interested in the whole conversation and attention. He was excited about his new music and projects, and just seemed to have a zest for life. This may sound so simple, but in todays world, you would not see the time, attention, and interest, a celebrity had for their fans
Hello, Who ever put up this website is to be commended. I remember sneaking out of my parents house to see Dan with Edgar Winter in 1974. I thought Dan was an amazing writer and musician. I was amazed at how talented he was, he played bass, guitar keys, and sang. I am SO happy I got to see him live. I still have all his Lp's and listen to his music often. He certainly kept a low profile and just seemed to let his music do his talking. I live in the Boston area and knew he lived in Westport and hoped our paths would cross in the music industry but unfortunately they never did. I was shocked and saddened to learn of his death in 94.I never knew anything about his personal life and I feel bad he thought people would think differently of him if they knew the truth. I don't think it would have made a bit of difference, but times were different in the '70's I guess...
Hi Everybody Dan has been on the top of my list of favorites for about 24 years. My 10 yr. old daughter saw N'Sync last week and she asked about my favorite concert of all time. Believe me, I have been to a lot of them, but the all-time favorite was the Edgar Winter Group at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston, Texas, 1973. I was a sophomore in high school then and there was no ticket master. all the tickets were pre-printed and sent to different stores so you could only hope for good seats. I skipped school that day and got pretty good seats, about 15 rows up from the floor. It's a round arena (b-ball court at the U of H) so all the seats were pretty good. I got my tickets 7 weeks before the show and the anticipation just about drove me crazy. Foghat opened and they were great. Before Edgar Winter came on, me and a girlfriend sneaked onto the floor level and made our way up to the front row. We stood on the chairs the whole time as the stage was about 6 feet high. When the group came on, I just about went nuts. Dan was wearing a black and white sequin outfit with matching platform boots. He looked so cool. They opened with "Keep playing that Rock and Roll" ( STILL my all time favorite rock tune) The girl I was with was amazed as I sang along. She wanted to know how I knew all the words! Next they played "Free Ride". Dan played a Fender double neck ( bass and guitar in one) During the riff after each verse, Dan played the guitar on the bottom while Edgar reached over and played the bass notes with his right hand. I was soooooo cool. Rick Derringer was smokin' on guitar that night. I didn't keep up with his career much and one night happened to catch him on the David Letterman show singing "I can dream about you". I have been looking for info on Dan for years and didn't know until last year that he had died. I was very saddened on learning this. I was glad to find this website. I hope we can keep his memory alive for a long time to come. David Alan Hoskins
Hi I have numerous connections to The Legends. I saw them in concert about 30 times from 1969 to 1973. All those times were when it was Dan, Joe and Larry except once in 1973 when Dan had gone to Edgar Winter and Larry Schwatzwalder had taken his place. (Without Dan the band seemed like just another band; that was unfortunate because Larry and Joe were so talented in their own right.) I saw them mostly when I was 13 to 16 years old. I was a guitar player and was fascinated by Dan's guitarmanship; it was to me absolutely incredible. My older sister's boyfriend was a high school classmate of Dan's and was quite a good friend of his, so through that connection I would talk to Dan occasionally in their breaks between sets. I was just a kid really (he was six years older than me but he seemed to me at the time to be like 15 years older), but Dan always was very respectful of the questions I would ask him, not a jerk in any respect. A funny twist of fate was that I had arranged to take guitar lessons from Dan (arranged via my sister's boyfriend) and the very week I was to start he had received word from Edgar Winter, so I never had a lesson. The Legends were absolutely incredible; I've seen almost every major rock and roll act in concert and I must say that very few groups matched their musical talents and chemistry. What made them so interesting was the breadth of their music selection. They'd go from playing a carbon-copy Hendrix set to a piano set which would include "Ride Captain Ride" to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" to "We've Only Just Begun." They particularly liked playing "Ohio" by Crosby Stills and Nash; sometimes they'd play it twice in one set because they liked doing it so much. Of course they'd play their own compositions. Frankly, I liked all of their original stuff: Jefferson Strongbox was their most played original composition and is still one of my personal favorite rock songs, even though I've never had it on record. I saw them most in a small house that had been renovated specifically for rock bands to play in, "The Country House." It no longer exists. Acoustically it was great. I also saw them play at high school dances and at outdoor rock concerts with other groups. Just before Dan left for Edgar Winter, they were playing at a high school dance, and Larry had a drum set problem and he told Dan to "just sing something." So he sang and played "Autumn" by himself, which showed up on They Only Come Out At Night. What a great song. I've gone on and on, but as you can tell, they really left an impression on me. Mark Andrew
Hi My name is Enoch and I like to say that I really love Dan Hartmans music I was away from the music scene for a while but now I'm back. I'm a drummer from Vista Ca. I just like to say that I miss Dan Hartman the musician and seems to me that he was a good person as of what I here from this web site. I saw him perform with the Edgar Winter Group back in the 70s he was fantastic. I just like to say Dan Hartman was an excellent musician I miss his fabulous talent. Thanks to you guys for the updated web of Dan. Thanks Enoch
Thank you for replying to my e-mail! I came across your website while I was looking for Edgar Winter stuff. My favorite EW album is "Jasmine Nightdreams'', and I've been trying to find a normal stereo copy on CD. I live and work in Lansing, Michigan, where I am a nightclub musician (keyboards and vocals), and the owner of a sixteen track studio called Sacred Hill Recording. Edgar and I share the same fondness for Ensoniq keyboards (we both play the TS-12),and I used to play saxophone in school (although nowhere near as good as Edgar)! Your website came up in a normal search mode on AOL. It was impossible to listen to the EWG without becoming a Dan Hartman fan as well. Far and away my favorite DH penned tune is "Easy Street". My sincere condolences to his family. A great talent has been taken from us. Thank You for your love of Dan's music, and your website. Keith McIntosh

I am not quite sure who gets this mail, but one of my favorite songs in the world is (I can dream about you). What a song and what a voice! The feelings I get when I hear the song is, well, I wish I could describe it. We will always have Dan in our hearts and our radio. Thoughts and prayers to Dan's family and friends... Brenda
I am a huge fan of Dan Hartman and own most of his records as I used to DJ in the early 80's. Thank you, loved your tribute. Brian T. Lakin
